Quick read - easy to understand - a little enlightening

If you are looking for a quick read or primer on Abraham Lincoln and his rise into political legend this is the book for you. I had it done in a night or two and felt like I had a better grasp, at least on the surface, as to who President Lincoln was. I'm pretty sure this was free as well so what's not to like about that.

I am very disappointed in this Delphi collection

I am very disappointed in this Delphi collection. They promote that this is the Complete works which tells me it should have all his writings, it does not. It is missing quite a few of them. They need to reword the title so it is not misleading. As for this collection Delphi did a good job putting it together and it is an excellent collection of majority of his works, but it is lacking a dozen or so books that he has all so written to make it a complete collection. My biggest disappointment was not to have Irving's Opus the Complete biography of George Washington. It only has volume 1 very disappointing.

Washington Irving: Not what one would expect.

Although I had read most of Mr. Irving's stories, I had no idea what the circumstances of his personal life were, or his attitude toward writing, other writers, and people in general. The stories, and the revealing information about the man are all contained within. There is nothing here that is not of interest, if you like the genre.

Good collection of his works. There was one missing or that I could not find, Moorish Chronicle, that I had to find elsewhere but otherwise good collection of his stories. Several brought back fond memories from my youth.

Good read even if characters are deeply flawed

Okay, I am predominately an American Literature fan and like a lot of English Literature as well. I have never had a desire to read any French Literature. Not sure why just haven't. I picked up this book because a movie was made based on it and the cast is pretty stellar and if I know a movie is based on a book I will always read the book first. It was a fairly easy read although DuRoy clearly is a scoundrel and not likeable one bit and the fact that he had no moral compass was difficult to stomach at times. It is difficult to enjoy a book when the main character or characters have no redeeming qualities especially when they don't get their just rewards in the end. But in spite of this I enjoyed the prose and story and if anything it reiterates today's society as well in that sometimes in life the scoundrels finish first.

a glimpse into the inner workings of a scoundrel..

i was a fan of maupassant's "the necklace" but never bothered to look into his other writings.. i was surprised to see he had written bel ami, which is now a movie.. i tried watching the movie, thinking it would be interesting, but its more uncomfortable than anything.. i couldn't make it past 15 minutes, but this isn't about the movie.. being a female i was used to scoundrels and their ways.. this book gave me a bit of insight as to the mind workings of one... yea, it was written a long time ago, but the themes in love and love making are pretty much the same throughout history.. its kind of terrible to think that there are people like that and a little humbling to know that people like that existed even then.. i know a lot of people like to think it was a more innocent age back in the day, but there was a lot of scandal then as now.. i don't desire to read this book again in the near future, but it was engaging and thought provoking to me.. it gave me a lot to think about my past relationships and fodder for me to over analyze the relationships friends that in relationships with scoundrels now.. its a good read, but its not a feel good book.. and the end, like many of maupassant's stories, is quite sad..

The Reality of Love

Bel Ami is the pet name given to the main character, Georges Duroy, by his favorite love interest and her daughter. In my opinion, Duroy is no more of a scoundrel than the women who love him.

The least attractive thing that he does is to marry a young, nieve girl in the end. He is experienced enough to allow this young girl all of the time that she needs to become a women. He is patient and willing to spoil her until she comes around to his way of thinking.

Book of Lies and a horrible female lead that makes me want to slap her.

A woman (Abby) knocks on a door dressed as a hooker offers a free massage...lies about where she works then continues the lies twin nights in a row after having sex with a strange man. Then she is livid that he thinks she's a HOOKER!

Skip to a party where she shamelessly flirts with a sleezeball and leaves the party with him only to go back and have sex with the first man. And who would've guessed..but she makes him think she had sex with the sleezeball. Again she cries gets revenge because she is not believed.

She wants revenge because he lied about who he is...? Yet everything about her is a lie and everything that he knows about her is a lie and she feels she has the right to pass judgement and that her anger is valid when all the bad has come from her. Abby is not a character I could ever like. I was hoping she would fall off the face of the earth and I am disappointed that she gets a happily ever after for her horrible behavior and delusions.

I really wish a real woman would have walked up and slapped her.

I hated this book. The two gal main characters are stupid, morals of an alley cat, judgemental, etc. Who would allow their best friend to talk them into dressing like a hooker, go to a total stranger who is known to be a drunk, womanizing, sleaze and have sex with him so that pictures can be taken to sell to his wife so she has proof of his cheating??? No problem sleeping with a married man since the wife is going to divorce him anyway. R U KIDDING ME?????? Oh, and she is the good girl. The P.I. will sleep with anything with a penis anywhere, anytime, etc. Oh yeah, two great gals you would want to introduce to your family.
Now, she dresses like a hooker, lies about who she is, has sex with a total stranger. Got the picture? Now advance a few chapters and she is outraged when she finds out the guy she had sex with was not who he said he was!! He LIED!! Can you believe this guy? What a rotten egg he is!! REALLY? It never got any better. I had to quit reading right close to the end before I tossed my Kindle across the room. I cannot believe how bad these two were, they had absolutely no redeeming qualities. Do not recommend you waste your time.

The heroine, while helping her PI friend,goes to the hero's hotel room dressed like a hooker and offers him a free massage. She' s helping" her PI friend get evidence that he's cheating on his wife. She has sex with him on at least 3 different occasions, before finding out he's not married, then slaps him for thinking she's a hooker??? Talk about shallow characters! I didn't even try to finish this book.

Rare and interesting

Because its so interesting to read a history written by a woman so many years back. Also the discovery of the Harappan culture was not done yet but still there are nuances in her writing which hint of a past beyond the Aryan civilisation. This is rarely seen in histories written by men.
