The novel "The Daughter of the King" is capable of transporting the reader to the far away social context of a bygone era. The characters, geographical locations and the lifestyle presented through the chapters provide the reader with a novel experience and that itself contributes considerably to augmenting the artistic unity and readability of the novel. Yet the development of the character of the protagonist, Princess Michal, implies that human emotions and relationships remain the same, irrespective of time or context. The writers provide elaborate details of the unfamiliar landscape and the lifestyle unfolded through the events of the plot. Ultimately, the novel interlaces romance, adventure and actual religious history, making the reading of the book a pleasurable experience. Moreover, the writers have successfully addressed the challenge of preserving the verisimilitude of the plot, and the originality of scripture, displaying their ability to spin fiction out of stark facts.

From the Author
This book started with a wish to write about a woman from the Bible.  After reading of a spat between King David and Princess Michal, the co-authors thought she might be our next heroine.  The Biblical account of her helping David escape from mad King Saul convinced us Michal was the one.  Not only did the princess love and marry one of the most famous kings of antiquity, she had some hair-raising adventures along the way. How could we resist writing her story?

Great Book, but Not For Me

Daughter of the King by Carlene Havel is a Christian fiction that takes many liberties with the story of David. I hate having to describe this book as fiction because it is an expanded account of the books of 1 and 2 Samuel however so many facts are omitted, details added, and liberties taken that I have no choice. I enjoyed the story of David as recounted from the perspective of his first wife, Michal, the youngest daughter of King Saul, but having now finished the book I wish I had not read it. I am certain that there are many readers out there who will love this story but, for me, it varied too much for my preferences.

First, a few things I loved about the book. I did feel very emotionally connected to the characters. Even though the book started out a little bit slow I did feel an intimate emotional hook that made me want to read the story. Despite being familiar with the story of David I was uniquely drawn to this book because it is written from the perspective of his first wife, Michal. Later in the book this perspective became an issue for me but in the beginning it was a joy. Very rarely are we given insight into the perspective and feelings of a woman from the Old Testament so it was an enjoyable change. I also loved seeing Michal's growth as the reader flips between Michal as a young adult and her memories as a child and her first year with David. By the end of the book we know Michal as an old woman beyond her child-bearing years. Being able to experience her entire story was wonderful, despite it not adhering completely to Biblical details.

I also appreciated that Havel began each chapter with a scripture verse. It helped to connect the Biblical story of David to her story about Michal. It kept the timeline consistent and allowed the reader to refer to the Bible for study, if desired. I have not yet referred to my Bible but I will probably be revisiting these stories now that I have read Daughter of the King.

One of the conflicts I had with this book was the love story between Michal and David. I know, it is clearly described as being a powerful love story from the Bible however I had issue with David's overwhelming love for Michal. Biblical accounts tell of Michal's deep love for David but there is no mention of David's love for Michal. In fact, many speculate that she was more of a political pawn, married and kept because she was King Saul's daughter and provided David with a legitimate claim to the throne of Israel. In Daughter of the King, Michal is depicted as David's "beloved" and favorite wife but I do not recall any confirmation of that in the Bible. There are theories that he neglected her and kept her away from him, deliberately never providing her with children. Depicting them as the best of friends and dearly beloved was troubling for me.

I was also conflicted by the continual appearance of Michal after her public outburst at David's dancing after returning home with the Ark of the Covenant. Biblically, this is the last we know of Michal other than that she died childless. The fact that her story continued for years in Daughter of the King and the book ends with her still maintaining a close friendship with David was something I did not anticipate.

I was also disappointed in the handling of Bathsheba. There was no mention of her husband, Uriah, whom David had killed so that he could marry Bathsheba and bear children. There is also no mention of the child that David and Bathsheba lost as punishment for David's crime against God. There is also no mention of any of Bathsheba's children other than Solomon who almost appears in the book as an afterthought. I was very disappointed in the lack of inclusion of Bathsheba and Solomon, especially considering their importance to David's story.

Overall, I enjoyed the book and, if it had not been drawn from true Biblical history, I probably would have enjoyed it a great deal more. As its own stand-alone story it is wonderful! The characters are thrilling! Abigail was so sweet and innocent, Maachah and her children were so much fun to loathe and the new wives and concubines were obnoxious. David was appealing one moment and dastardly the next making him a realistic and lovable, though deeply flawed, hero. If this had been a story drawn completely from fiction I would have loved it completely however, fiction mixed with Biblical truth left me feeling disappointed. As I've said, there are so many who would love this book but unfortunately it let me down.

Enjoyable and interesting story

Daughter of the King is far different from my usual reading material and I started it with some trepidation. I found myself almost immediately caught up in the story of Michal, the daughter of Saul and the senior wife of David. Writing historical fiction using characters from scripture, particularly one as well known as David, has its perils but Havel and Faucheux pull it off beautifully. First, by starting each chapter with Biblical passages, they ground the story in the context of what we know from scripture. Second, they have clearly done their research; the locations, clothing, tools, architecture, etc of the period are so well rendered that it is easy to believe their version of events. Given their desire to create an interesting plot, it would be easy for the authors to get carried away and lose track of the story of David, Michal, Jonathan, Saul, etc based on what we know from the Old Testament. They never fall into that trap; they create a lovely tale but never lose the truth of their characters. If I had one criticism, and it is a minor one, it's that when Michal finally is reunited with David and meets the other wives, the pace slows down a bit for a few chapters. Even so, it is understandable that the authors have to spend some time establishing the new characters and setting things up for the final third of the book. All in all, this is a very enjoyable read and well worth your time. I highly recommend it.

Wonderful read.

I started reading this book around six in the evening and finished it at three a.m. I could not put the book down. The story told from the view point of King Saul's daughter, Michal was so interesting and enjoyable. Like I said, I could not stop reading.

Fragments of Letters

This review is for the free Project Gutenberg version of "The Letters of a Post-Impressionist Being the Familiar Correspondence of Vincent Van Gogh" translated by Anthony M. Ludovici. Since these Project Gutenberg books do not carry a unique ISBN number, Amazon frequently mixes reviews with others versions.

I've never been a fan of biographies- they seem to say as much about the biographer as the subject. But I have become a bit of an addict when it comes to collected letters of interesting people. I've always been fascinated by Van Gogh so when I went looking for collected letters I started with this free version.

"Letters" is actually conservative British philosopher Ludovici's 1912 translation of Margaret Mauthner's German translation of Bruno Cassirer's original Dutch work (Clear as mud, right?), Roughly a third of the book consists of Ludovici's very long introductory essay and appended notes regarding the translation.

The core of the book is actually fragments of letters from Van Gogh to his brother, Theo or friend, Emile Bernard, with no context at all- no date, no identification of the paintings mentioned, Nothing other than section headers indicating the recipient of the following fragments. Although Van Gogh's comments were fascinating, the fragmentary nature and lack of context was extremely frustrating. It really doesn't provide a very full look at Van Gogh. In addition, many of the original letters included sketches but- at least on a kindle keyboard- they aren't visible here. You can , however, read this book on the Project Gutenberg website and the sketches show there.

The best parts of this book are 1) it's free :), 2) if you are interested in the process of translation, there is tremendous detail and 3) best of all, in the process of trying to identify some of the paintings mentioned I found the vangoghletters.org website. Wonderful site with a comprehensive collection of letters with context given. For example, the first letter in this book is letter number 257 on the website. It was written August 14, 1882 and the paintings mentioned are identified. And, get this, you can actually click a link to see an image of the original letter. I may still buy another Van Gogh letters collection, but it really isn't necessary now that I've found this site.

This was a very good eBook. I have read couple other physical books on Van Gogh and also Brenda Ueland's memoir Me: A Memoir. She was a very inspiring author and was the one that put me onto Van Gogh and his inspirational letters. Apparently Van Gogh was a very caring and inspiring character above and beyond his art. It appears he died peacefully in bed in a mental hospital after shooting himself. He knew he had mental problems. I was shocked to discover that he made only about $150 off of his extremely valuable painting in his own lifetime. I used to live in France in 1960's and wish that I had discovered French art, especially Impressionist art while living there. But I was too young to appreciate it then. This book of letters helps me relive some of the times I spent in France. I recommend it.

One of Cooper's best sea tales

A remarkable sea tale that has to be one of Cooper's best for plot twists--especially the ending! If you aren't technically literate in all the sails on a clipper or a packet boat, don't worry... Just skip over the names and realize that things were much more complicated then than today!! and trust the captain and crew to get the job done! Prejudices were somewhat different over a hundred years ago from what they are now, but the window on human nature at its best and worst is Cooper's strength. Cooper fans will want to compare this novel to his non-fiction life story of a sailor narrated in Ned Myers: a Life Before the Mast.

My homeschooling nephews are reading some Dallas Lore Sharp and their mother turned me on to his books. Absolutely gorgeous writing! I learned so much about animals in this book. I think of him as a poetic naturalist. I downloaded several of his books and savor them with an aromatic cup of Bustelo on the weekend. Very nutritious reading!

Anyone who is interested in just how differently women of all classes and cultures lived day to day, were raised by their own families and how they raised their own, and the cultural constraints that were the reality of women's lives prior to the mid-1960's, should read this book. It should be required reading for young women today to appreciate, and defend, their freedoms today.
