Great songwriting and great singing add up to a great album.

Ediwn McCain's songwriting really shines on this album. The tracks "Sorry to a Friend" and "Solitude" are both destined to be classics among Ediwn McCain fans. Unfortunately, as others have mentioned, he has only had a few radio hits; "I'll Be" being his most popular, and another great example of beautiful lyrics and songwriting, although on a different album.

The tracks range from bluesy folk to light rock. The lyrics are often sublime, and always intelligent. McCain's voice is like a glass of fine whiskey; edgy and smooth at the same time.

Excellent album for those looking for something accessible, yet mature and engaging.

A Southern Rock Classic

I recently repurchased this CD after losing my original several years ago. Though the production value isn't what I really remember, the music itself has easily stood the test of time. By far, this remains Edwin McCain's best CD, even though his bigger hits came later.

The jazz influence stands out here more than on later recordings, and it's really too bad he didn't keep that element. There's also a playful element that fits perfectly with the attitude he shows on stage.

If you're an Edwin fan that hasn't listened to this disc yet, it's an absolute must-have.

much remains unknown

To students of ancient Greece and to historians of science, this book gives a detailed coverage of our understanding. The author summarises decades of effort by him and others, in deciphering what the Greeks knew. Nor is the text strictly about Greece. Speculations are made about how much the Greeks were aware of the Babylonian astronomers and their observations. Much here still remains unknown, about this degree of interaction. Given the paucity of surviving records, much will probably forever be unknown. But the book gives reasoned suggestions that some awareness was probable, and the influence that this might have had on the Greek research efforts.

Many of the Greeks mentioned are quite well remembered, though not necessarily for their astronomical works. Plato, Eudoxus, Pythagoras and others.

One of the better modern works in the History of Ancient Astronomy. Dicks has updated and corrected many prior authors in the field and definitely exhibits his knowledge of the science of those ancient times. This is no mean feat, as translating mathematics and measurements of 2,000++ years ago into modern terms is beyond the skills of all but a few. The only thing I did not much like were occasional condescending remarks about some of the writers with whom he disagreed; he is good, but he's not the only expert in town.

Solid work, assumes experience with astronomy

Dicks' book is similar to Heath' Aristarchus of Samos: The Ancient Copernicus (Dover Books on Astronomy). Dicks is more critical than Heath about the ancient testimonia for Pre-Socratic writers.

This book takes as granted that the reader is familiar with astronomy. I think that literature would be improved by more books that work out astronomy from first principles using ancient observations, instruments and texts. The only book I have found that does this is Evans, The History and Practice of Ancient Astronomy, but I would like something logically more severe, that avoids using the word "north" until it is defined either theoretically or as an action to be performed. (We can define north either by first defining the celestial sphere and taking its pole, or using shadow.)

The only books I've found by Dicks are this and his "The Geographical Fragments of Hipparchus". It is unfortunate that he did not write more books, because he is precise, has a good style, and seems to have a mastery of the astronomical and geographical knowledge of ancient Greece. Readers now are used to hearing about stars as hugely distant giant objects, not as points of light in a dome over the sky, but in fact knowing about these points of light gives you a solid piece of knowledge, whereas knowing various curious facts about black holes and quasars is morally improving but does not give you mastery of anything. But ancient Greek mathematical geography, e.g. defining meridians, parallels, tropics, distances, etc., is in fact tightly connected to ancient Greek astronomy, given that the Earth is an immobile sphere concentric with a much larger celestial sphere.

A lighthearted, fun read

Fun read, reminded me greatly of Cold Comfort Farm. Enjoyed the episodic structure where Jasmine is shunted around amongst her wealthy relatives after her father's death in each chapter. She has a subtle and remarkable way of changing all of them unbeknownst to herself which is rather satisfying.

Quite a time-saver and well thought out

I have a couple of Kindle Fire 7's that were recently added to my household: they go with kids age 7 and 11, and I hadn't really had the time to determine what apps I should load on them besides browsing the "most popular free" section. I haven't really found what I've looked for there, as what is most popular is not what is educational. That's why I picked up this book: it promised to save me a few hours of experimentation.

I just sat down and went through every page of the book, alongside one of my KF's, looking specifically at the app descriptions that addressed educational areas that I wanted my kids to focus on. The book was divided nicely into sections cover art, math, reading, music and a couple of others. Each app was described well, including basic functionality, additional features, pros and cons, and if there were any notable problem with the Kindle interface. Sometimes the writer would actually detail how to accomplish something in the app (like saving a sound file) if the app was a good one with a particularly vexing gotcha. That was particularly winning for me, since it was obvious that the book was being created with care to add value to the apps that are out there.

When I was done with the book, I had come up with a list of 11 apps I wanted to install for my 7-year-old and 12 apps for my 11-year-old. Now I can install those apps and lock down the Kindle Store permissions again, fairly confident that I've given them the best of what's out there on the educational level. I'm grateful to AppBible to putting together this concise guide. I can just imagine someone trying to publish a non-electronic equivalent of this book and having to fill it with fluff just to fill the page count, and this is a very welcome alternative!

Terrific Selection That Takes Away the Guesswork!

I am so happy that I took the time to look through this. It is packed full of great reviews and details on a ton of educational Kindle apps for children. It takes a long time to download and try out apps, especially if you plan on having your kids play with them. Mr. Middleton had done a wonderful job of trying out a bunch of apps, only including the ones that he thinks are worthwhile, and giving us quick and easy to get through details about each app. I know what my pet peeves are with apps so it's easy enough when he lists the pros and cons for each one to see if there is a con I just won't tolerate. These are broken down by category with age ranges and a grade based on a variety of criteria. Mr. Middleton has only included those apps which get a certain grade. I read through what was pertinent to me in a matter of half an hour and since I was reading on my Kindle, I was able to download apps as I read about them.

Worth every penny.

The App Bible series of guides is a helpful series for anyone who owns a Kindle Fire. The author knows the platform, and has personally tested each app he has reviewed. This provides a great balance to the often skewed reviews found on the app store.

The apps are divided by type so that you can go more quickly to the type of apps you are most interested in. You can go directly to the app from the provided link if you decide the review indicates that the app is for you. Also provided are links to the developer and the developer's email.

There are notes about the app from the author, giving a basic description, along with what he found good and bad about the app. He provides a subjective score, which, by the description in the introduction, should be fairly accurate. Also provided are a rationale for downloading the app, tips for using the app, and a summary of the app store reviews.

If you want a way to get accurate info about actually useful apps, without having to weed through the worthless filler on the app store, this series needs to be in your library
