Opens the door to a mysterious book

Isaiah is difficult for me. I've read through it several times, noticing many of the high points (the prophecy of the Child born of a virgin in Isaiah 7:14; the suffering and death of the Messiah in Isaiah 53). But much of he historical context was lost on me. Rev. Smith, to me, is fairly easy to read, and really puts Isaiah in the proper context. Rev. Smith sees Isaiah as an inspired prophet of God, and is unencumbered by the unsanctioned so-called "analysis" of the liberal critics. Enjoy!

I love that this gives historical understanding! It helps to get an understanding so you can understand the events that are prophesied and the importance of the things that came with Jesus coming to earth! Very good study!

A 1917 Take on the Old Tale

Note: This work implies one knows the basics of the story of King Arthur. It is not an introductory piece, but a sort of add-on.
It's an interesting read thus far, and, rather than sounding worn out, brings in perspective of the knights and Merlin who worry over their king, a man falling apart after his queen's betrayal. The story begins with this having already happened, as the characters speculate to themselves the future. It's written in prose in the style of medieval tales, but with rather modern English (if one would call 1917 modern). If one wants an interesting read, another perspective of the legend, it's worth a read, especially at the price of free. It might be prettier in book form, but only in the sense that older tales often do - I do not believe anything intrinsic was lost in the transference to digital. My only regrets are that it is not longer, and the perspective does shift suddenly. Shifts of perspective do tell to whose perspective it now elaborates, but there are many of such jumps, which may bother some.

I really enjoyed this. It is set during the time when Mordred has exposed the Queen and Lancelot and Merlin is "under Vivian's spell" and he comes back to treat with Arthur and it shows the point of view from Merlin and some of the knights of the Round Table and how they might feel about the events that are happening. It shows a different point of view. It was a good read and interesting to think about this topic in a different light.

About the Author
Harriet Beecher Stowe was an American author and abolitionist. Born in Litchfield, Connecticut, she was raised in a deeply religious family and educated in a seminary school run by her elder sister. In her adult life, Stowe married biblical scholar and abolitionist Calvin Ellis Stowe, who would later go on to work as Harriet s literary agent, and the two participated in the Underground Railroad by providing temporary refuge for escaped slaves travelling to the American North. Shortly before the outbreak of the American Civil War, Stowe published her most famous work, Uncle Tom s Cabin, a stark and sympathetic depiction of the desperate lives of African American slaves. The book went on to see unprecedented sales, and informed American and European attitudes towards abolition. In the years leading up to her death, suffering from dementia or Alzheimer s disease, Stowe is said to have begun re-writing Uncle Tom s Cabin, almost word-for-word, believing that she was writing the original manuscript once again. Stowe died in July 1, 1896 at the age of eighty-five.

The first tourist guide to Florida

This is the book that started the popular rush to the Land of Flowers - Harriet Beecher Stowe's 1874 essays covering everything from picnics up Julington Creek to the mass destruction of Florida's beautiful birds for their plumage. Although Mrs. Stowe was concealing her real reasons for coming south every year from 1866 to 1884 and there were other essays too dangerous to publish in this volume, it is still a treasure trove for modern sojourners to the Sunshine State. No wonder 14,000 - 15,000 people flocked south in the first year after it was published (1875) and they haven't stopped since!

If you come to Florida and get stuck in traffic, you can blame Harriet Beecher Stowe and this book.

When traveling, I like to read books that connect to my destinations. I knew little about Palmetto-Leaves except that it was written by the author of Uncle Tom's Cabin and was related to Florida to where I was headed. It turned out to be an ideal Florida read, helping to erase the din of condo developments, killer drivers and loud restaurants, letting you remember what once lay beneath the cement.

In 1872, Stowe and her husband, "the Professor," settled in Mandarin, in northern Florida. The chapters are newsy accounts and advice for a northern audience with fine descriptive passages and sketches of daily life, agricultural and climatic realities and economics, and the people she finds there. Get past the opening folly, the metaphor of a stray dog encountered during the move down there, and you have a shrewd but warm modern journalistic voice. It neatly documents the post Civil War era, especially the former slave culture that was finding its way through education and land grants. Stowe proudly considers her vision of the former slave community to be supportive and progressive, especially as she argues the work ethic and contribution to the economy. She'd probably be wounded to hear that her "noble savage" outlook is no longer considered enlightened. But the picture she provides of a new world rising, before Jim Crow washes over the South, is important. Her outlook on the value of education for all children is sanguine and always significant. And her record of Victorian era travel, as yet undisturbed nature and the origins of wealthy winter homes is valuable.

A note about this edition: I gather it is print on demand. It is a photocopy of an original copy--you can see shadows of original markings on the page, and the paper is, well, bright white 20 lb. copy paper. But the important thing is, those of us who love physical books have access to this title.

I live near near her homestead and the book brought me delightful information about the settlement of the St. Johns River area. Particularly enjoyed reading about the flora and the river outings. It was also enlightening to read about the free Negroes that migrated to the area.

Analysis of the Inquisition

The content of the book was fascinating and the author certainly provided ample information on the topic. The sentence structure and use of numerous archaic words made the reading a bit difficult. Thank goodness for the definition app on my Kindle! It made understanding the ideas behind the words so much easier.

A First Class Analysis and Description

An excellent first book to this series. The book is not an easy read but is packed full of detail, description, analysis and all supported by original document references. The Inquisition fell into "periods" because it evolved from the despicable corruption of the Catholic Churchmen through to a desire to address what was considered heresy and to save souls by the destruction of the body. Book I deals with the inception based on a Church that can only be compared to a Mafia organization that was totally above the law. The development of the corruption and the motives of the Churchmen are clearly explained. "Heresy" at this stage was not what most of us assume it to be.
The author wrote this book over 100 years ago and so his style is difficult to follow (thank you modern day schooling) but well worth the effort.

Too much repetitive information.

Book is interesting in that it gives great insight to the problems the Roman Catholic church faced in keeping all the people of the Catholic faith believing everything the church taught, also brings to front how corrupt the early the middle age Catholic church was and how members of the clergy were so very self centered. After reading about the early church and the Inquisition one starts to wonder how come there still a Catholic church today.

I did not care for how the author jumps back and forth between Popes and centuries, kid of leaves you lost at times as the author try's to explain why and how events happened.

This book is just plain hard to read, but if you are a history buff this book can add a great deal to your knowledge of this Middle ages.

Short but well done

Well, I hit "buy this book" by accident, so I figured I had better read it. This was a very short but very nice little addition to my library. In fact, it was well written to the point I wish it had been longer. I liked the characters. Even though it wasn't long enough for there to be much development with them, you still get a good sense of their personalities. The story was clear and smooth and left me wanting more.
