Otherworldly Tales

If you enjoy stories about ghosts, ghouls, vampires and werewolves this book might interest you. The stories seem to be from the 1800s which means the authors had a pretty good grasp of the English language and the vocabulary is incredibly good. I felt these stories were captivating to the imagination and were very well told.
The first story is about a man who spends a night in a haunted house in London. This is probably the scariest story as many ghosts appear. The second story wasn't that good so I skipped through it. "The Open Door" was pretty intriguing as a desperate ghost reinacts a situation he faced in life. Will he ever break free?
"The Deserted House" is about a mad woman so it is not really a ghost story except a ghost obviously influences a suicidal artist who draws a murder scene. This of course gets him in trouble. Will the true murderer be found?
"Green Branches" is beautifully written and is the most descriptive story of the lot. It however has a sad ending.
"The Four-Fifteen Express" has a lot of suspense. It really is more like a train mystery.
There is also a story about a female werewolf who marries a man who has run away from his own land because he murdered his wife.
"The Withered Arm" also has a sad ending. Not what I was expecting.
"Clairmonde" is about a priest who falls in love with a courtesan who is really a vampire. Does the priest love her more than he loves God?
A very interesting story.
Finally, "Barchester Cathedral" is about an invisible ghoul. Not all that frightening and a little sad.
So I found this book enjoyable to read and I think you will like it if you read short stories from the 1800s. It took me three days to read the entire book and it kept my attention most of the time. Each story is very well crafted and should interest anyone who loves otherworldly tales.

I love a good ghost story

This novel was great fun. I do enjoy a good ghost story and here were some of the best of the nineteenth century. Usually I read contemporary fiction, this was a nice change. I even enjoyed the quaint (to me) ways of nineteenth century literary writing conventions. You might like then, too. A story or two were a little slow, but, all in all, this is a good read.

Those were ghost stories I'd never heard before. I liked the book because it was origional without repeats. I found the stories very interesting and in the end they were simply to the point without further elaborating on the outcomes which we had already learned.
