Not My Cup of Tea

I gave this four stars because most of the stories are well written and imaginative. However, most of the stories have that "pulpy" feel to them. I never cared for the gumshoe detective tales of Ellery Queen, but apparently, most of the writers are paying homage to that very style. No scares or thrills- mainly detective stories involving beautiful women who happen to be psychic, haunted (politely) or who are vampires.

I admit that I am primarily a horror fan, so maybe that's why this collection held very little appeal for me.

If you really want to get a true feel of the life and times of Al Capone ,this is probably one of the best books you can find ;for the simple reason it was published in 1931 at the height of his career and notoriety.It therefore is void of all the fiction that was introduced in later years,particularly when so much was written and introduced in the movies,books and TV series "The Untouchables.Also,since it was published in 1931,it does not cover the time after that,his trial ,prison sentence and later life.
There are several editions listed here,and there are possibly more.My edition looks a lot like the one shown,but has a red cloth cover,a B&W dust jacket with a head photograph of Al wearing a hat ,and smoking a cigar.It also includes an Introduction and Epilogue by Andrew Sinclair dated 1966.The book was first published by.Faber and Faber of London,the second edition by Latimer Trend & Co of Great Britain..It has a 2-page map of the Loop District of Chicago.It has no photos or other illustrations as mentioned in other editions.It has 325 pages.The book includes a great amount of detail and probably as factual as you can find.So,mine is not a first edition and probably published in 1966 or shortly lafter. There has been so much embellishment in the books and film about Al Capone,through the years,particularly with respect to entertainment;this book tells the story at the time it took place.

It's gets a bit predictive but I still remember the first time I read it being totally charmed and continue to be so after many re-reads! I think all the Twi-ppl need to discover young romances that are much better reads!

I really like the concept of this story

I really like the concept of this story, but I can't give it 5 stars because the protagonist got on my nerves and, to be honest, I missed having interactions or another POV or something. I started off thinking she was endearing, but by the middle I was skipping and skimming a lot since a lot of what she was saying was sort of the same. Again, great concept, but it just wasn't for me. I know people that LOVE this story though, so...you just can't please everyone :)

I read this book in two days. Being a Mom and full time student, I had to find time to read it and stayed up late many nights. The ending really caught me by surprise. I really enjoyed how Jean Webster drew you into the book and you could still imagine what was going on while reading all the "letters". I have read the book twice so far and plan to read it again.

typographical terrors!

The new edition of one of Barker's best collections contains an ironic bonus for those who are familiar with The Body Politic. Namely: this printing is CRAWLING with typos. It is time for the editors at Pocket Books to turn off the spellcheck and hire a proofreader.

Clive Barker--nothing more needs to be said.

This is probably the second or third Barker collection I came across, way back in 1987. I was a high school kid, immersed in King, Straub, Lovecraft, Koontz, but Barker was a writer I had to think about, someone whose writing style aimed above the usual 6th grade average. His images were unsettling and confusing--I remember coming to the end of the title story and thinking, "Wwwhaaat?" but that was so long ago. I credit Barker with making me a more discerning, sophisticated reader. Horror could be sharp with wit, laced with the blackest comedy, and subversive like the punk rock music I loved. He approached topics like sexuality and psychology unlike any other writer I had ever read. This book, Volume 5 of "The Books of Blood," is one of the very strongest. He toys with religious fanaticism and fundamentalism in "Revelations," with the Devil in the modern world in the fable "Down, Satan!" and with eros and extreme arousal in "The Age of Desire," one of my favorite stories by him. This was one that I would retell to my shocked friends at lunch. They wanted to be weird, to be outcast, but Ha! they weren't willing to go all the way. Barker, he goes all the way. He is, along with Harlan Ellison and Lovecraft himself, the only writer of any type of fiction, that I can reread now, over a decade later, with satisfaction and awe and respect. Clive Barker. Make no mistake.

Gruesome! Horror at its best!

No doubt about it, Clive Barker has got what it takes to write great horror. these four short stories stir the nerves and haunt the mind. this is edge of your seat terror which wont allow you to stop reading till its over. Having bought the audiobook edition, I found myself glued to my headphones listening to each creeping story. From creatures hidden in knots to sexual lust out of control to body parts bent on destruction this book has it all; if all horror books would only have these elements it would be great. The narrator Dillinger Steele did a pretty good job at reading the book but since most of the stories took place in London he failed to inject any hint of a british accent. His southern one kind of muddles up the voice of the characters at times but he does not shy away from doing his best to give the listener the gory details. A great book to add to a horror fans collection or an audiophile's one. Highly recommended; now I want to buy In the flesh. By the way, Amazon is practically the only etailer which has the audio versions of these books still on hand; get them before they're gone!
