Redemptive, feel-good, rags to riches story

Heartwarming yet suspenseful tale of a 15 year old boy in Victorian England born to a genteel family fallen on hard times. Orphaned and alone on the mean streets of London, Philip, a boy of great character and ingenuity. makes an astounding discovery in the broken cobblestones of the deserted Mews after a violent electrical storm. This discovery gives Philip a chance to rise up out of poverty if he plays his cards right. A very enjoyable book with a lead character you will like a lot. The book follows Philip from age 15 to 25. I could have done without the one or two instances of racial stereotyping that reminded me of the era in which it was written. Otherwise, a satisfying read with issues of moral choices, forgiveness,and redemption.

This man is an excellent writer. His plots are incredibly complex, the heroes virtuous and compassionate, the villains monstrous but sometimes redeemable. I could hardly put this one down.

Very enjoyable, couldn't put it down, then wished it wasn't over!

I enjoyed reading this tale. When I started the book, with all of the English brogue, I almost stopped, but the author had already pulled me in wanting, and hoping that Philip would get out of the Mews and grow up to be a successful, happy man. The murder plot, need for revenge, and actors role were deftly spun so a person couldn't put down the book, you had to know if they would succeed. Though I'm sure everyone who reads this wants to find that a just punishment is rendered, the author gives us a lesson in compassion, forgiveness, and looking at the bigger picture.

I loved and hated it

There were stories I couldn't get enough of, Charles Antin, Elizabeth McCracken and Caitlin Horrocks' to name a few, but there were so many others I found horrible. I like weird, fantastic tales, like the girl whose hand turned into a hoove--as long as it's a story. Too many, especially the whole first half, excepting Charles antin, felt more like long form poems than stories. Maybe I'm just not sophisticated enough, but I just want to read a story, not some kind of free association dream sequence. I like weird, it just felt like they went too far. I don't regret reading this one and I'll probably get the next one, I just hope it's more like the first unstuck which I could not put down.

After the first book appeared in 1880, Joel Chandler Harris was deluged with letters from readers all over the country asking for more stories of Brer Rabbit and his friends--so for the remaining years of his life he collected and wrote them. I enjoyed reading this book. Some parts of this book are kind of boring, but overall it is interesting to read about the superstitions of people from the 1800's. Makes me wonder how people from that time period ever got anything done on a day to day basis.

A little disapppointing, but still fascinating!

I absolutely love the Samantha Moon series And I was overjoyed to see the latest was out. But I was sort of disappointed in this one. For starters, she doesn't seem to be getting any better control over her 'powers'. Everyone seems to be able to hear her thoughts. And the powers seem to be growing in everyone around her, she can't seem to stop that either. The storyline was sort of predictable too. I knew what was wrong with everyone on the island long before she seem to. The talking to a higher being was really sort of stretching especially with all of the other stuff going on in her body, Dark masters, vampirism etc. And the decisions she makes at the end was sort of stupid. First to rush to the most dangerous villain while carrying what he sought, not too smart. Her ex-boyfriend swimming all the way there just to say a few lines and then to fight the entire set of bad guys while she rushed to the above mentioned confrontation, not really worth the trouble. When told she only had to take one action to eliminate future danger, she voluntarily does the over kill thing, that would certainly reduce her effectiveness and ability to protect her loved ones, which was really not necessary! Her new sidekick was really getting sort of on my nerve too. All this and the collection of men in love with her which seems to be growing is also sort of distracting. I had hoped she would finally clarify what exactly was her destined role or function. Is she just a vampire, or a detective, or an avenging angel or what? We keep hearing she is special, why?? I was sure how to rate this so rather than rating it higher I went with the lower version, cause after I thought about it, I realized I just didn't like it.

First off, I'm a fan of this author, but not of this latest book. He STILL needs a good editor,and I'm increasingly frustrated that there doesn't seem to be someone competent reading these books who can at least spell the word ''barbecue" properly. And that's the least of its problems. Come on. If this were a free download, okay, but I'm paying money for a professional work, so please give it the necessary polish. The plot was convoluted, I started to not care, Samantha Moon now seems to be the center of the universe but her detecting skills apparently are diminishing in proportion to her growing magical appeal. The author poorly -- clumsily? -- telegraphed numerous clues to the reader that were so glaringly obvious to us but which curiously missed Moon. Very little mystery here. I'm extremely disappointed in this latest installment.

I love Samantha Moon!

Such a good read. But too fast,sigh! The book had a turning point that I totally did not see coming. J.R.Rain exceeded my expectations. But now I have to wait for the next book to see how the sort of cliff-hanger works out. Hopefully it will not be too long a wait. J.R. Rain is an automatic buy for me. It is amazing to me that a man can portray a woman's emotions so well. He does a great job.
