Christmas spirit in print!

A wonderful story told through a series of letter exchanges between Santa and a young boy. I fell in love with both characters very quickly and was sad to leave them at the end of the story. A great read for "kids from 1-92"! This will definitely be included in my pre-christmas reading next year, right along with Twas the Night Before Christmas and the Grinch!!

which was excellent from the start to the end

This is the first time that I have read Mr. Brown’s book and I found I just can’t help loving it. It is a complex tale in very interesting language, which was excellent from the start to the end. Dan Brown uses a lot of history and art into the story, which in a way feels like having an art lesson at house. The interesting subject, compelling characterizations, an appealing plot that moves easily from one scene to the next, also remind me of thinking about the world where we live in. What really hit me most is that it also presents some really interesting and deep questions, such as, the future of humanity and a legitimate threat to the species. A good book is not only excellent in its characters and its plots, but also able to inspire its readers to think, to ponder and to make progress. Therefore, I give this five stars and highly recommend you to read it.

A dissapointment of excess

I had enjoyed the first two books of this series, but I did not enjoy this one. It was not the plot at fault, because this was clever with unexpected twists. My reason was that there is a huge amount of detail about art and its history, Florence and Venice. At times it seems an entire page at a time is taken up with detail which often is not necessary for the plot. I grew bored as details of who crafted what and why and its relevance to what the characters were doing, or the detailing of the architecture of a building they were running past. By the midway point I had had enough. From then on I began skimming just to find out what happens in the end. No doubt those with a greater interest in art would have reveled in it, I was just bored. I was also irritated at having to search for the odd nugget to do with the plot amongst a wash of "stuff".
If the author produces another book like this I will not buy it.

The only clues to stop the villain are clues left by the villain, who was convinced he shouldn't be stopped. If that logic doesn't stop you, nor does the awful writing, you might like this. As Dante said, and repeatedly quoted in this book, "Abandon hope, ye who enter. Here."

This book describes the French Revolution in great detail. Lefebvre describes all of the various factions and their actions. He also describes the actions of the opponents of the Revolution whom were practically all of Europe. This book is never boring and is less than 300 pages.

Cute, Entertaining

This was a cute update of an old favorite. It takes a few liberties with the original story, but still a pretty good show. It was purchased for my 8 year old daughters who have recently become fans of Pippi after we read the books togetherThe Pippi Longstocking 4-Book Set: Pippi Longstocking, Pippi Goes on Board, Pippi in the South Seas, and Pippi on the Run. They were thrilled to see the movie depicting their favorite character. Pippi is supposed to be the strongest girl in the world and in this movie, rather than physical strength she has what is more like magical powers and that was slightly disappointing, but still entertaining. While this movie is a must have for Pippi fans, my daughters seem to prefer the older version with it's sequels (all dubbed in English) because they were truer to the original stories.The Pippi Longstocking Collection (Pippi Longstocking / Pippi Goes on Board / Pippi in the South Seas / Pippi on the Run)

A Victorian "lurid novel" - slow but compulsive

In brief, this work from the mid-1800's is the story of a good man lured into a series of progressively bad, then evil deeds, which haunt him until his end. The title is misleading, as it is neither a romance nor about sisters. In Victorian terms, this is a "lurid" novel with a slow, twisty plot that has almost no romance to it by today's standards. Think of it as in the line of Edgar Allan Poe's story "The Tell-Tale Heart" in novel length. More after I talk about the author a bit.

Richard Dowling, pen name for Marcus Fall, was an unsuccessful novelist of the Victorian era who turned out over 60 books, only a few of which are currently available. This book is the only free one on Amazon. Six more of his books are currently available on Project Gutenberg, which is the source for this edition. He was Irish, and said once that he could either write great novels (Dickens for example) or "unclean", which would sell, which is what he wrote. A brief biography is available here [...] or more can be found in Wikipedia. (I found this information after I read these three volumes and wondered about him and the odd title of the book.)

This novel is the story of Henry Walter "Wat" Grey, a small city banker in England in the days when small independent banks still existed. He inherits the bank from his father and runs it successfully until he loses a great sum of money in investing in the Confederate States during the American Civil War. Driven by the need to cover his losses, he proceeds to a series of coverups and embezzlements, culminating in the use of an old wealthy miser's money that was intended for his only daughter to keep the now-fallacious reputation of his bank's solvency alive.

When the old miser is dying, Wat is appointed executor and guardian of the then-20 year old daughter's money. Wat at this time is 45, and the temptation of marrying the young, completely sheltered 20 year old daughter to hide his disgrace overwhelms him and obsesses him to the point of further evil deeds and, ultimately, to his end.

The pace of the story is admittedly slow, almost to the point of exasperation, but it is rather compulsive reading. I did skip some parts where the descriptions of the obsessions of Wat became tiresome and added little to the advancement of the story, but I did finish it. I think the author intended the slowness to enhance the reader's understanding of how muddled this once-good man's thinking became. (Or it's just bad writing!)
It is not a long book although it is in three volumes, and can be read in one day.

I gave this book 4 stars because it is mostly well-written, and I did get drawn into the relentless downward spiral of Wat's mind to the point where I had to finish the book to see what the ending could be - other than the worst possible (he threatens suicide several times). The ending was rather just, I thought, and although not surprised by it, I was surprised at feeling relief that this man's self-caused sufferings were at an end without further damage to others.

Today's reader would probably find this book too slow or too overly-dramatic. But if you read -all- of "Jane Eyre" and "Wuthering Heights", you might enjoy this book. If you like Edgar Allan Poe, especially "The Tell-Tale Heart", this reads like an extended story of his. Great literature it is not, but it is a fairly well-told, twisty, creepy story leavened with some positive moments.

Slow moving

I don't quite know why someone bothered to digitize this book. I read...and read....and read....and all it read about was the description of some stuffy old gent and his evening habit of sitting in his chair sipping his claret before the fire. The ENDLESS descriptions of him were waaaay more than I wanted or needed to know. So Boring...The only thing interesting was the title, in my humble opinion. This obviously must have been a free book or I wouldn't have bought it. Sorry!
