Excellent analysis of the this historic event

This is not a story about the battle. Rather a very interesting analysis of the outcome and why it is memorialized. Well worth reading.

A rare gem of western Americana

This unfinished work of Maclean's is a historical, literary and cultural tragedy as great as Mary Lee Settle's unfinished biographical novel about Thomas Jefferson and Mahler's tenth symphony. The fragments of Maclean's lifelong study of the Custer campaign that have been collected in this slim volume reveal an extraordinary historical masterpiece in the making. Written mainly from the viewpoint of the Sioux nation today's readers can see clearly how the Indians won the battle but lost the war and are still losing it today. Not only was Maclean a writer with great insight into the cause and effect of past events, he also treated historical characters whose motives and conduct are questionable today, with sympathy and respect. For any reader interested in western American history, this rare gem is a must.
