Finally available for the Kindle - just as originally published by the Harvard Classics

The Harvard Classics represent a point of view that existed in the very early years of the 20th Century, when Harvard University president Charles W. Eliot conceived of a 51-volume anthology of classic works from world literature. They became known as "Dr. Eliot's Five Foot Shelf" because the books as published were said to fit on bookshelf and take up no more than five feet of space. Each volume had 400-450 pages and the texts were "so far as possible, entire works or complete segments of the world's written legacies". Collier and Son offered the books to the public with great success, and it is reported that Collier sold 350,000 sets within 20 years of the initial publication.
The books are all now in the public domain and for a number of years continued to be offered as hardcover books by the Easton Press. Today only paperback editions are available (newly printed) by Kessinger Publishing.
Similar collections of 'Great Books' have been suggested and offered by other publishers but the Harvard Classics have continued to have a particular status, even if the translations have aged, and the interest in these classic works has waned.
In any event, with that brief introduction, it now appears that these editions are available for the Kindle, packaged identically to the original 51 volumes as published over a century ago.
This Volume 2, for example, contains three works: The Apology, Phaedo, and Crito of Plato, translated by Benjamin Jowett; The Golden Sayings of Epictetus, translated by Hastings Crossley; The Meditations of Marcus Aurelius, translated by George Long.
Introductory notes for each book are included as they were originally written for this Volume 2 (see Plato; Epictetus; Marcus Aurelius (The Harvard Classics) for copies of the actual book available on Amazon), and the books are well formatted for the Kindle and presented without any typos or editing errors as far as I have so far determined. Table of contents is included but only links to the first page of each work.
There are other editions available of these works, and in fact there is a single-volume Kindle collection offered that appears to include the entire contents of the Harvard collection (51 volumes of the Harvard Classics which I believe is being counted as something like 120-130 'books', plus another 40+ books from the companion set of Harvard Classics Shelf of Fiction): The Harvard Classics & Fiction Collection [180 Books] (Illustrated) or this similarly named edition The Harvard Classics Collection [140 Books] (Illustrated). There are also other individual hardcover books still published that have similar content, for example the Loeb Library Marcus Aurelius (Loeb Classical Library) is quite excellent but each volume is expensive and obtaining the full set would be very expensive indeed; other editions such as those available from the Modern Library are also very good (Meditations (Everyman's Library (Cloth)) and of course there are Penguin and Oxford editions available of most if not all of these works.
On balance I think that this is a fair value; at two dollars per volume, the entire 51 volumes can be obtained for a hundred bucks, but most people will either be satisfied with one or two from the collection, or the more cost effective choice would be to get the full set as one volume for the Kindle even if it may be a bit unwieldy to navigate (I haven't purchased it myself, so I can't say).
