Goblin Tales of Lancashire

I enjoyed this book very much and found quite a lot of useful information in it. I'm currently doing background research for a fantasy novel, and I learned quite a lot from Goblin Tales of Lancashire. The stories are well written and quite entertaining. The only problem I found was that several of the stories are told in dialect which makes reading them a bit like slogging through mud. I ended up skipping most of those. However, that still left much to enjoy, and public domain makes this available for free, so I can't complain! All in all, a good read.

interesting book with good advice for about finances and life

We all know PT Barnum for this circus. What we don't know is the man behind the circus. This book shares some insight into that. There is a lot more depth than you'd expect. He is more than "a sucker is born every minute" (which he didn't even say, by the way). What you get here is his philosophy of work, money, and life. Good advice you may have heard before but interesting in this concept. Like staying out of dept, for example. Over 100 years old and it still applies today. Finding your path, treating people well, etc. I got a lot more out of this than I expected and it gave me new insight as to the man PT Barnum was.

Phineas Taylor Barnum (July 5, 1810 - April 7, 1891), American showman who is best remembered for his entertaining hoaxes and for founding the circus that eventually became Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus.

In Brooklyn, New York in 1871, he established "P.T. Barnum's Grand Traveling Museum, Menagerie, Caravan, and Circus", a traveling amalgamation of circus, menagerie and museum of "freaks", which by 1872 was billing itself as "The Greatest Show on Earth".

There's a sucker born every minute" is a phrase often credited to P.T. Barnum. However, when Barnum's biographer tried to track down when Barnum had uttered this phrase, all of Barnum's friends and acquaintances told him it was out of character. Barnum's credo was more along the lines of "there's a customer born every minute" -- he wanted to find ways to draw new customers in all the time because competition was fierce and people bored easily

Barnum wrote several books, including The Humbugs of the World (1865), Struggles and Triumphs (1869), and his Autobiography (first in 1854, and later editions including 1869).

The Art of Money Getting is really the story of how to run a sales organization by understanding the mind and tastes of your primary customer base.

Barnum is a treat to read and is never boring! I highly recommend his books.

A Lifestyle Classic

A superb book and absolutely essential reading for anyone serious about making a success in business, or indeed a success in life in general. There are indeed many books about self motivation and success on the market and some are very good indeed, but this one stands out and should be a tool in every serious minded entrepreneurs arsenal. I can also recommend Napoleon Hill's classic Think and Grow Rich and anyone into sales and marketing, check out Simon Ashley Richmond's WRITE AGAIN VOL 1, not strictly a business book, but what bizarre ideas that man has for persistent sales tactics.

About the Author
William Goldman (b. 1931) is an Academy Award–winning author of screenplays, plays, memoirs, and novels. Born near Chicago, he earned his bachelor of arts degree at Oberlin College, where he began writing fiction, followed by a master of arts degree at Columbia University. His first novel, The Temple of Gold (1957), was followed by the script for the Broadway army comedy Blood, Sweat and Stanley Poole (1961). He began writing for Hollywood soon after, and would script some of the finest films of the era, including Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969) and All the President’s Men (1976), for which he won two Academy Awards.
Goldman continued writing novels, several of which he then adapted as screenplays, including the hit movies Marathon Man (1976), Magic (1978), and The Princess Bride (1987). He has also written acclaimed essays, and several memoirs of his career in Hollywood.

the disenfenchised have always walked among us

Being 29, I do not carry the bias of nostalgia that other reviewers may hold. This book was published 13 years before I was born, but the subject matter is timeless. There have always been(and will forever be) teens who become disillusioned with life. Goldman has created, in Raymond Euripides Trevitt, a character with whom most of us can connect. He doesn't relate, or effectively comminicate, with his parents. He finds it easier to burn bridges than to appear emotionally vulnerable. We follow him through a tremendous friendship with a kid named Zock, several girlfriends(relationships ranging from purely physical, hollow offerings to that exaggerated brand of heartache & tragedy that seems to've been patented by teenagers), high school, rivers of booze, a stint in the Army, college & marriage. We have to endure his search for the fabled Temple Of Gold, helpless to save him the trouble. There is more tragedy than triumph, more sadness than laughter, more anger than understanding...in short, Raymond experiences Life. Reading this book, I felt the sense of powerlessness my own parents must have felt. You can only witness in silence as painful, life-altering decisions are made. Wisdom can only be found on the other side of mistakes and bad decesions...it cannot be taught. Raymond has to bludgeon his soul before he can mend it. Temple Of Gold is wonderully written. It is realistic and moving. If it lacks something in the eloquence department, it is because Raymond is telling the story...not Zock. I'm afraid I've lost the thread somewhere in this review...just read the book. You'll be very glad that you did. Teen-angst isn't usually this edible in literature.

I have never loved a book the way I love this one. As someone who previously reviewed it said, it is the reason I became a writer. I have never written a word or reflected on my own life without being influenced by it. My mother, who was good enough to give me her copy (which, of course, I've subsequently given away) always called it The Better Catcher in the Rye and I tend to agree. I give this book to anyone I really love.

An all time favorite

I've read this book a couple of times - first when I was a senior in high school, again a couple of years into college, and then most recently as a first year grad student - and every time I've loved it. There are a lot of reasons(it's wry, sincere, frighented, hopefull, and terribly honest... not to mention beautifully written), but I think one of them is that as Goldman works his way through the complex weave of friendship, hope, love, fear, confusion, etc with which he fills this novel, amist it all he somehow manages to capture that rhythm by which life just goes on and on and up and down and you learn some lessons and other things leave you scarred but either way things just keep moving. It's a really difficult thing to accomplish in such a personal and straigtforward novel such as this, but when it is accomplished, it's wonderful.
That's just one stab at explaining one of many reasons that I loved this book, though. I recomend it wholeheartedly.

over the top

I first read this book years ago (too many to count) and was amused at the time. The copy I had/read has been lost, I had family that served in WWI and so I was interested, particularly in the trench warfare and what the soldiers endured. Over the top gives a soldiers perspective not unlike a Hemmingway novel. I class this as a worthwhile read.

Great book!

I really enjoyed reading this. Its an interesting look at life in the trenches from the perspective of an American that served in the British army. At times the author describes some pretty horrific scenes. I suspect that his sense of humor helped to keep him sane during those awful times. I found his sense of humor to be hilarious and it is especially highlighted in the dictionary that he provides at the end of the book. Overall, my only complaint about this book is that the photos are missing. However, the book was free so I won't complain too much over this minor detail. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in World War One. It's an excellent first person account by someone that was there.
