The App Bible series of guides is a helpful series for anyone who owns a Kindle Fire. The author knows the platform, and has personally tested each app he has reviewed. This provides a great balance to the often skewed reviews found on the app store.

The apps are divided by type so that you can go more quickly to the type of apps you are most interested in. You can go directly to the app from the provided link if you decide the review indicates that the app is for you. Also provided are links to the developer and the developer's email.

There are notes about the app from the author, giving a basic description, along with what he found good and bad about the app. He provides a subjective score, which, by the description in the introduction, should be fairly accurate. Also provided are a rationale for downloading the app, tips for using the app, and a summary of the app store reviews.

If you want a way to get accurate info about actually useful apps, without having to weed through the worthless filler on the app store, this series needs to be in your library

After buying kindle fires for my kids I felt totally overwhelmed by the appstore. I wanted apps that my kids would enjoy, be engaged in, learn from & I didn't have a lot of time to sift through junk. This History of the Danes, Saxons, and Normans, is pretty informative if not downright educational

This book would be better titled 'William the Conqueror' before and after. The 'Before' of this book is all over the place but for a good reason. England was all over the place after Rome was gone from the British Isles. The Britons solicited the Saxons to help them with the pesky Scots, Irish, Picts, and Celts. The Saxons helped and decided to stay and most Britons retreated to Wales or were absorbed into the Saxon population. The Danes eventually became interested England and more chaos ensued.
Meanwhile we learn how the exiled Normans (Norwegian clan chiefs) were sent to the outer Hebrides. While they pillaged and looted The British Isles they were eventually looking for settlements. Failing to maintain anything in England they moved on to France and eventually won Neustria from the heir to Charlemagne. This land called Neustria was immediately changed to Normandy. It was there William the bastard was born.
Now back to England.... where the Danes and Saxons were knocking heads back and forth for control when the Pagan Dane Knute finally took over all of England, Denmark and Norway.
So the Catholic church stepped in seeing the converted Duke of Norway William as their way to put christianity back in England.
Though eventually you realize all the stories before 1066 of the Saxons, Britons, Danes, French, and Norwegians all are leading you to William the Conqueror, it is easy to get confused. It's interesting and factual all leading to the obvious conclusion that Williams influence on England lasts to this day.
Roman Catholic church did the same thing to the Germans in 1273 - Finding the Habsburgs to unite the German kingdoms, clans, and chiefs under the banner of Christianity. That lasted for about 650 years all under one family.
The facts in the book were interesting and I did find it definitely worth my time.

Another plot driven, suspense filled thriller from Koontz.

Having just finished reading "The Vision" when I picked up this novel, I was shocked to find that the main character once again has psychic powers which cause them to witness (experience) the murders of a serial killer as they occur. Not only that, the main characters in each story have also suffered a great trauma at some point in their life and the events that unfold within the stories force them to face the fears that have haunted them ever since. It's as though while writing the first book, he came up with what he thought was a better idea and started on it straight afterwards. "The Face of Fear" thankfully turned out to be quite a different book to "The Vision" though, being a far more action orientated, movie-like experience.

In "The Face of Fear", Graham Harris witnesses the murders of "The Butcher", as he rapes and slaughters women around New York City, through psychic visions. After it becomes apparent that Harris is able to give police information on the murders, "The Butcher" decides to go after him and his girlfriend Connie. What we end up with is a couple of hundred page climax where Graham and Connie are hunted from floor to floor of an office building, with occasional glimpses into the mind (or is that minds) of a murderer.

I enjoyed this book as much as any of the other Koontz books that I've read so far. His books are very plot driven and straight to the point. He never gets bogged down with long dialogues or character studies and instead chooses to focus on the action and the events that drive the plot forward. This can be seen as a good or a bad thing in my opinion. They're like Hollywood blockbusters where you leave your brain at the door. There are plot holes and bad decisions, yet you hardly have time to think about them as you turn the page to find out what happens next. Having read only 4 of his novels so far, I'm starting to tire of his formula though and hope that there are some added variations to my next choices.

Overall, "The Face of Fear" is a good, tense read and recommended for thriller / action fans. The ending is totally and terribly contrived and you'll know who the killer is early on, but that doesn't prohibit this book from successfully keeping you gripped and taking you on a suspense-filled ride.

mature but well-written

I am thirteen years old, and I read Face of Fear by Dean Koontz this year. I found it, in the end, to be a very suspensful and intiguing book. I must warn though, that this piece of literature is not for the faint-stomached, or the easily offened. It involves discusions and descriptions of very pornographic scenes, and has parts involving the mind of a phychopath and descriptions of murder. However, to get past these details to the story, this book is a quickly read, don't-want-to-put-it-down thriller. It may get a tad boring a chapter or two near the end (descriptions of rock-climbing techniques and equipment), but it makes up for these flaws in a wonderfully told, fast-paced tale of a hero, a villan, and a girl. The story is about a phychic who sees murders take place in his mind, discovers he is being stalked by the killer acting on these murders, and him getting trapped in a skyscraper which he and his girlfriend are forced to rappel down the side of. However, he is paralysed with fear from a climbing accident on Everest years ago... I rate this book with 4/5 stars, because of the minor flaws mentioned earlier. If you are a fan of any other Dean Koontz novels or like modern horror movies like Scream and H20: Halloween, read this book. I hope you enjoy it.

Towering Fear

One of Dean's cleverest - and most suspenseful - straight thrillers. And one it's hard to say too much about, without giving away the game.
A psychic helping the police out on a difficult serial-rapist case finds himself, and his girlfriend, the target of attempted murder by the culprit. The rapist/murderer manages to isolate the pair in an empty skyscraper over the holidays, and plays an elusive cat-and-mouse game with them - to the death.
This one shoots out of a gun, like most of Koontz's early works, and doesn't let up for a second. It's a fast, easy, involving read. Koontz's style is minimalistic, telling virtually the entire story through dialogue and simply drawn action, shifting character perspective inventively to keep the reader guessing who the guilty party is. And even once that's known, he manages to slip in an extra surprise or two.
This was made into a very good T.V. movie with Lee Horsley and Pam Dawber, which suffers in comparison to the novel due to the fact that it has to prematurely show what the book doesn't.

Quick read - easy to understand - a little enlightening

If you are looking for a quick read or primer on Abraham Lincoln and his rise into political legend this is the book for you. I had it done in a night or two and felt like I had a better grasp, at least on the surface, as to who President Lincoln was. I'm pretty sure this was free as well so what's not to like about that.

I am very disappointed in this Delphi collection

I am very disappointed in this Delphi collection. They promote that this is the Complete works which tells me it should have all his writings, it does not. It is missing quite a few of them. They need to reword the title so it is not misleading. As for this collection Delphi did a good job putting it together and it is an excellent collection of majority of his works, but it is lacking a dozen or so books that he has all so written to make it a complete collection. My biggest disappointment was not to have Irving's Opus the Complete biography of George Washington. It only has volume 1 very disappointing.

Washington Irving: Not what one would expect.

Although I had read most of Mr. Irving's stories, I had no idea what the circumstances of his personal life were, or his attitude toward writing, other writers, and people in general. The stories, and the revealing information about the man are all contained within. There is nothing here that is not of interest, if you like the genre.

Good collection of his works. There was one missing or that I could not find, Moorish Chronicle, that I had to find elsewhere but otherwise good collection of his stories. Several brought back fond memories from my youth.

Good read even if characters are deeply flawed

Okay, I am predominately an American Literature fan and like a lot of English Literature as well. I have never had a desire to read any French Literature. Not sure why just haven't. I picked up this book because a movie was made based on it and the cast is pretty stellar and if I know a movie is based on a book I will always read the book first. It was a fairly easy read although DuRoy clearly is a scoundrel and not likeable one bit and the fact that he had no moral compass was difficult to stomach at times. It is difficult to enjoy a book when the main character or characters have no redeeming qualities especially when they don't get their just rewards in the end. But in spite of this I enjoyed the prose and story and if anything it reiterates today's society as well in that sometimes in life the scoundrels finish first.

a glimpse into the inner workings of a scoundrel..

i was a fan of maupassant's "the necklace" but never bothered to look into his other writings.. i was surprised to see he had written bel ami, which is now a movie.. i tried watching the movie, thinking it would be interesting, but its more uncomfortable than anything.. i couldn't make it past 15 minutes, but this isn't about the movie.. being a female i was used to scoundrels and their ways.. this book gave me a bit of insight as to the mind workings of one... yea, it was written a long time ago, but the themes in love and love making are pretty much the same throughout history.. its kind of terrible to think that there are people like that and a little humbling to know that people like that existed even then.. i know a lot of people like to think it was a more innocent age back in the day, but there was a lot of scandal then as now.. i don't desire to read this book again in the near future, but it was engaging and thought provoking to me.. it gave me a lot to think about my past relationships and fodder for me to over analyze the relationships friends that in relationships with scoundrels now.. its a good read, but its not a feel good book.. and the end, like many of maupassant's stories, is quite sad..

The Reality of Love

Bel Ami is the pet name given to the main character, Georges Duroy, by his favorite love interest and her daughter. In my opinion, Duroy is no more of a scoundrel than the women who love him.

The least attractive thing that he does is to marry a young, nieve girl in the end. He is experienced enough to allow this young girl all of the time that she needs to become a women. He is patient and willing to spoil her until she comes around to his way of thinking.
