Quite a time-saver and well thought out

I have a couple of Kindle Fire 7's that were recently added to my household: they go with kids age 7 and 11, and I hadn't really had the time to determine what apps I should load on them besides browsing the "most popular free" section. I haven't really found what I've looked for there, as what is most popular is not what is educational. That's why I picked up this book: it promised to save me a few hours of experimentation.

I just sat down and went through every page of the book, alongside one of my KF's, looking specifically at the app descriptions that addressed educational areas that I wanted my kids to focus on. The book was divided nicely into sections cover art, math, reading, music and a couple of others. Each app was described well, including basic functionality, additional features, pros and cons, and if there were any notable problem with the Kindle interface. Sometimes the writer would actually detail how to accomplish something in the app (like saving a sound file) if the app was a good one with a particularly vexing gotcha. That was particularly winning for me, since it was obvious that the book was being created with care to add value to the apps that are out there.

When I was done with the book, I had come up with a list of 11 apps I wanted to install for my 7-year-old and 12 apps for my 11-year-old. Now I can install those apps and lock down the Kindle Store permissions again, fairly confident that I've given them the best of what's out there on the educational level. I'm grateful to AppBible to putting together this concise guide. I can just imagine someone trying to publish a non-electronic equivalent of this book and having to fill it with fluff just to fill the page count, and this is a very welcome alternative!

Terrific Selection That Takes Away the Guesswork!

I am so happy that I took the time to look through this. It is packed full of great reviews and details on a ton of educational Kindle apps for children. It takes a long time to download and try out apps, especially if you plan on having your kids play with them. Mr. Middleton had done a wonderful job of trying out a bunch of apps, only including the ones that he thinks are worthwhile, and giving us quick and easy to get through details about each app. I know what my pet peeves are with apps so it's easy enough when he lists the pros and cons for each one to see if there is a con I just won't tolerate. These are broken down by category with age ranges and a grade based on a variety of criteria. Mr. Middleton has only included those apps which get a certain grade. I read through what was pertinent to me in a matter of half an hour and since I was reading on my Kindle, I was able to download apps as I read about them.

Worth every penny.

The App Bible series of guides is a helpful series for anyone who owns a Kindle Fire. The author knows the platform, and has personally tested each app he has reviewed. This provides a great balance to the often skewed reviews found on the app store.

The apps are divided by type so that you can go more quickly to the type of apps you are most interested in. You can go directly to the app from the provided link if you decide the review indicates that the app is for you. Also provided are links to the developer and the developer's email.

There are notes about the app from the author, giving a basic description, along with what he found good and bad about the app. He provides a subjective score, which, by the description in the introduction, should be fairly accurate. Also provided are a rationale for downloading the app, tips for using the app, and a summary of the app store reviews.

If you want a way to get accurate info about actually useful apps, without having to weed through the worthless filler on the app store, this series needs to be in your library

Can't wait for the next book

I really enjoyed the first book of this trilogy and can't wait to read the next installment. Being an avid fan of paranormal books it was interesting to come across a different spin on the vampire world. The author has managed to portray a different perspective to his vampire world which leaves the reader eagerly waiting to find out what will happen next, between the clans, the forsaken and lets not forget the human component of Jason.

Great and Exciting book!

I started reading this book, I could not put it down! I GLADLY give it 5 stars with out even thinking about it. I love vampire books both action and romantic such as like the Twilight series and a Lyndsay Sands novel.
This book compares and I feel just as good! I Recommend this to any vampire book reader and look forward to the next one in Feb 2013. Thank you for the enjoyment!!!!

Promising

The vampire world "Sanctuary" introduces us to is not a different spin, is not a different take or anything else that other reviewers have said. Power, forbidden love, betrayal, and a few secrets thrown in, there is nothing special about the plot to make it stand out above others.

The story was short, I can't call it a book. Took about 30 minutes to read through. It stayed at a steady pace and did not get bogged down in feelings or internal thoughts of the characters too much which is nice. The story seems to be a very promising premise to future books, but Sanctuary opned the door to many questions with absolutely nothing resolved, ther ewas no conclusion to this story. Normally, even with books that will have a sequel, there is some aspect of the story that is tidied up and finished- nu-uh, not here.

There were several flaws in the editing that should be looked at, Brenden was misspleed as Brended, but nothing that was too distracing. Good start to a storyline.

A story of China

This is a great book on Imperial China. The story is set in the late 1800's. Alice Greenwood is the heroine of the story , from her awful experience at her father's murder, to her kidnapping and life at the house of CHU.Fluent in the chinese language, she just does not fit in with the arrogant english folks living in China. And does not fit in with the chinese either, so set apart from nearly everyone she grows into a woman of courage, strength and compassion.

Unusual book, fascinating history

I highly recommend this unusual book for the painless history lesson it provides as well as the unusual characters it portrays. The cover makes it look like a romance novel but it is much more than that. The story concerns Alice Greenwood, born of English missionary parents, who (with her brother) largely grew up as a servant in a Chinese household. Her first sexual experience took place at 15 with the patriarch of the household, but Alice did not consider it a trauma; rather, she learned to express her sexuality with a freedom and sensual enjoyment hugely at odds with the Victorian society of the time. An important aspect of the story was Alice's life-long love for a young Chinese reformer, which horrified her family and friends. But she had come to know what precious few Westerners in China ever discovered: that the Chinese ("natives") were as human as the Westerners and that their culture was as rich, complex and humane as the culture of the West.

Despite Alice's difference from the Victorian family with whom she is eventually reunited, she does not seem like an anachronistic character; her differences and attitudes grow organically out of her exeriences and she is a whole person, complete with blind spots and faults. Both Western and Chinese characters are presented with some sympathy as three dimensional people who are so firmly entrenched in their own world-view and personal interests that they are blind to the larger picture of what's happening around them.

The book illustrates a chapter in world history that I was hardly aware of, taking place when the Chinese empire was in disarray and both internal politics and Western predation were tearing it apart. The author's research and realism are apparent on every page (to my foreign eyes, at least). The book covers an unusually long time span in detail, which may be one of its weaknesses: I think it would have been even better with some editing, and I skimmed over some of the descriptive portions. Nevertheless, it was an excellent book. It has given me a good background from which to understand the Maoist revolution that followed. And Alice was such a vivid character that she remains in my thoughts three days after I've finished the book.

Great Historical Novel

I enjoyed this book very much. I learned so much about the history, culture, food and customs of the Chinese people. So much deep thought on so many things! The last 50 pages or so seemed to drag on, but it had to be that way I guess because of the intensity of it all. Very well rounded characters that I truly found myself caring about. Great history/learning story for any age except maybe for young teens.

John McDouall Stuart is surely one of our most unheralded explorers. While the story of Bourke and Wills remains in our storylines, McDouall Stuart, was the first to travel from South to Northern Australia, Adelaide to Darwin, forging new opportunities, including the Overland Telegraph line... opening up communication for Australia. The Wily Scot travelled on horseback, travelled light and pushed the limits of human endurance, albeit he died a pauper, his feats somewhat unrecognised.

great read

anybody interested in australia's history should definitely grab this one. A great read written by one of the most gutsy, brilliant of all explorers. even though written in the mid eighteen hundreds, it's language is still relevent to today. I've read several journals from early Australian explorers, but Stuart was the best. A good idea though is to have a map handy when reading it, so that you can follow his route and see the places he mentions. Awesome read !!

Oh, Sue!

I feel like I have to qualify this review because the rating does not reflect the book's quality but my own reaction to it.

I'm a 28 year old man who has read hundreds, if not thousands, of comics and my tastes are wide ranging from manga and anime to DC and Marvel to indie comics from Drawn & Quarterly, Fantagraphics, Top Shelf, Image, Dark Horse, and everything in between. So please don't think I'm marking this down because there isn't a masked vigilante with a cape as the protagonist. But I think this is a comic book for middle aged and older mothers who probably don't read many comics.

"Days of the Bagnold Summer" is the story of six weeks in the summer which Sue, a 52 year old single mother who works as a librarian, and her 15 year old metalhead son Daniel spend together. It's a subtle story told in 6 panel per page vignettes that comprise an accurate and moving portrait of the kind of relationship middle aged mothers and teenage sons have. The book reminded me of when I was a teenager (though I wasn't into metal nor did I wear a hoody) and Daniel's behaviour toward Sue was, at least in part, familiar. It's observations are spot on and the book overall is a true slice of life.

But...!

Oh GOD it's soooooo DEPRESSING! Joff Winterhart really went all out to make Sue's life so miserable! She's 52 but looks older and she really hasn't aged well. She was never a beauty but at 52... phew. And she wears massive sweaters and giant glasses... I can already feel female readers turning on me as I write! She's alone with her son, reminiscing of the times when he was younger and they had a more amiable and communicative relationship but now, he's distant. Her husband left her for a younger, more attractive woman. She doesn't have a significant other. She doesn't have friends. She doesn't have a fulfilling job. She's alone. ALONE!

At this point I thought, enough! please, Joff Winterhart, give this poor woman something, anything, good! But he keeps going, delving into her youth and giving her an abusive alcoholic stepfather, a boyfriend who went on to kill himself, friends who used her, and a tremulous marriage to a shallow man. The only good thing in her life is her son who doesn't want to know her.

This book is ridiculously sad and maudlin. Poor Sue, no wonder she's depressed! Reading this, I was beginning to feel that way too, and then when their dog dies and Sue can't stop crying I was actively looking for my noose! It became so overwhelmingly sad that I actually began to think Winterhart was going for a comic book version of a Thomas Hardy novel. Have you read "Jude the Obscure"? That scene where the son murders his siblings and then hangs himself is rightfully hilarious because it's just so over the top. Or maybe my mind just snapped at that point. Either way "Bagnold Summer" isn't quite that but it is gloomy under a seriously mean cloud.

Even in the more benign scenes like when Sue's listening to the radio in her car, singing along to '70s song, eating a toffee, the scene ends with her pulling out a filling! She just can't catch a break! You're a cruel man, Winterhart. I don't know why other reviewers have said this book is hilarious, they must all be sadistic and/or like me retreated to crazyland to survive the rest of the book.

Believe me when I say I enjoy gloomy books and that I don't prefer books to have happy endings, just true ones. Some of my favourite novels have downright miserable finales like Orwell's "1984", Steinbeck's "Grapes of Wrath", Fitzgerald's "Great Gatsby" and the aforementioned Thomas Hardy. But I think what made it worse was that Sue is a doomed character who doesn't deserve her fate but she's still never going to be happy. The one good thing in her life, Daniel, is going to leave school soon, leave her, and probably visit her a couple times a year. And that's Sue's lot. She runs down the clock working in the library, and then dies. It's just too sad, too hopeless. I desperately wanted Winterhart to give Sue something positive that wasn't connected to her son but he doesn't. Tough luck, Sue.

This is a fine comic, in fact I'm glad it was nominated for the Costa Award, it's good to see well crafted indie comics breaking through into the mainstream, and for the artistry in this book, it's well worth the maximum rating. But I can't give it because I struggled to read it. It's too miserable, too sad, and I was glad when I put it down because I didn't have to spend time in Sue's grey world anymore. Good news though if you're a middle aged mum, there's a comic written just for you that understands what it's like to raise a teenage son! Everyone else... just be good to each other, ok? Things aren't that bad.

A Traveler In Time, by August Derleth

August W. Derleth was an amazingly prolific author of genres such as historical fiction, poetry, detective fiction, science fiction, horror, and biography. He may even be better known for having founded a printing house called Arkham Press to make the works of H.P. Lovecraft and other authors of supernatural fiction more easily accessible to readers in the United States, as such stories had previously been published only in England.

"A Traveler in Time" is a very clever little story, featuring newspaperman Tex Harrigan. Derleth writes charming short stories about Harrigan, who maintains a File of Queer People that he tends to reminisce about. He is usually to be found telling the story of one of his stranger interviews to a friend, oftentimes in a bar. In this story, Harrigan tells of the time he interviewed a man who claims to have built a time-traveling machine. The time traveler informs Harrigan that there is to be a war in the not-too-distant future that will destroy New York City, and his method of avoiding this war will be to go back to a time where he will be long dead before here's any chance of the war affecting him. This story is written for the humor, and it is very humorous indeed! It hardly takes a half hour to read and this edition is free, so I say, you should try it!

I feel lucky that some of Derleth's short Harrigan stories are being digitized, but I sure wish that some of his longer, more serious works would be converted. It's so ironic that he founded a printing house and yet he himself is out of print.

A Good Laugh

It only took me 20 minutes to read it, and it was surely worth it :) It was a tad bit confusing at one point, but at the end I tied it all together, and had a good laugh! Definetly would recommend it.

Issues and this amounts to spoilers. Why take modern alternating current appliances into colonial America, what use would they be? Just one of the details of the story that bothered me. I'll leave it at that.
