It's about the people

This is such a good narrative of the life of this unique man that I couldn't put the book down. I was up until 1 am finishing it. I read it to research chivalry and knighthood, and ended up finding information on another piece of history I am studying. Ah well, the 14th century is all tied up in relationships. And Ms. Creighton details these relationships.
It is sad that Prince Edward, aka The Black Prince, died before his father. By dying so young, a mess was left behind. I was aware that King Richard II was quite young when he came to the throne, but I had no idea how bad things were. It is no wonder this boy-king had no idea on how to lead. Ah well, such is the state of affairs with lineage inheritance. And doting grandfathers who go senile. And a father who was off to war too much of the time.
Who knows what sort of king Edward would have made. But he was one heck of a warrior. His judgment, in helping Pedro of Castile, was a little faulty. Nothing came of it except more debt. It makes one wonder how much in today's money the 100 years war cost. Not only in terms of the actual war, but the loss to the people of France. What a horror!
If you want a good look at this episode in history, this book fits the bill. Think of it as an overview of the 14th century in Western Europe.
