Review
"In John Ermine of the Yellowstone, Remington has presented a great tale of a man caught between two cultures, never able to fully be a member of either."—Larry S. Sterett, Gun Week (Larry S. Sterett Gun Week)
"This edition of his 1902 novel, John Ermine of the Yellowstone, demonstrates that it is no dime novel, but an epic Western to stand with Owen Wister's The Virginian. . . . With excellent notes and a sound bibliography of further reading as well as the reproduction of Remington's original illustrations, this reissue is a welcome rescue of this novel from neglect."—Dime Novel Round-Up (Dime Novel Round-Up)

Fantastic!

If you want to get a clear understanding of the Indian way, this book will surprise you. It is well written, concise, descriptive and full of the color and texture we all have come to respect in Remington's artwork. But this book provides a glimpse into the culture of the Native Americans unlike other books, how they think, how they view nature and their place in nature. Additionally, this book provides an understanding of the life of a mountainman and the relationship with the Native Americans. I've read quite a few books about the great American West and quite honestly, this one impressed me.

Unintended Consequences
In the early 17th century, Spanish explorers, crossing the North American continent on horseback lost many of their mounts, but none of those animals were breeding stock. In the early 18th century, colonists drove 7000 head of stock North from Mexico City when establishing the colony at Santa Fe. The Pueblo Indians, enslaved for about 40 years, were used in the husbandry of the animals, learning to breed and attend to them. The colonists lost those horses when massacred by the revolting Indians that they had enslaved.
At that time, the nearby Plains Indians who subsisted on the vast herds of Bison, were pedestrians. The plains Indians, for thousands of years, were nomadic, following the herds on foot, living in tepees of skins and lodge poles, wintering on a diet of preserve flesh. These nomads were small groups of tribal families, continuously fighting other tribes competing for the best Bison hunt positions. They travelled with exhausting effort; walking and helped by dogs to sledge their simple housing , arms, food and comforts all loaded on the lodge pole travois on the hundreds of mile circuits of the migrating Bison. Survival depended upon aggression and defense, using simple weapons.
As the Mexican’s Indian slaves had been taught the husbandry of horses, including breeding and riding, after the Mexicans were massacred, some Indians found that horsemanship was a great advantage over all other Indians that were still pedestrian. This advantage soon decreased since the Pueblo Indian oppressors naively neglected to contain their horsemanship skills, and soon, in a most dramatic revolution, the entire Bison culture necessarily became expert equestrians and mounted warriors. When the United States, following the Louisiana Purchase in the early 19th century, began to expand westward, they found the great plains occupied and westward progress opposed by armies of mounted and determined warriors

I don't generally read Westerns, but gave this one a try. I was pleased that it was well written and proceeded at a good pace . Usually I find my mind drifting on this type of a Genre, but surprisingly I stayed focused and read the entire book . I think this is right up there with the Zane Grey books that my son read while I was home schooling him . Good reading material and a relative easy read. As a former Reading Instructor, I would recommend this book as a diversion from today's hectic young adult world of text and graphics ! Cheers and good reading.
