An amazing old book

An amazing old book, the real history of an amazing person - Joseph Meek. Born into an upper class family in Virginia, he left to become a trapper, an Indian fighter with an Indian wife, and an early settler and marshal of Oregon. He traveled throughout the entire continent West of the Mississippi at a time when just a handful of whites had been there, had exciting adventures and daring escapes, defeated a bear in hand-to-hand combat, and when Oregon needed US help in an Indian war, traveled all the way back to Washington DC and met with President Polk - whose wife was his cousin!
The book reads like historical fiction but it's all true. The style is very modern considering when the book was written, and is both scary and funny in places. It's a window into the past, the history of the West long before the gold discovery that dominates later history.
Hollywood - do a Joe Meek movie! Have your people call my people......
The second half of the book is equally interesting, an early account of George Custer's life and famous "last stand", with a lot from the Indian perspective.

A good description of the Fur Hunters of early America, in particular of one named Meeks,
also contains a deep description of the Custer Battle, with the complaints of the American Aboriginals

Historically interesting but dull

This book is actually two, a biography of Joseph Meek and a history of the Indian war of the 1870's.
Joseph Meek was a mountain man for about a decade ending in 1840. Then he moved to Oregon at the start of the great migration where he helped maintain order for about two decades. Clearly, he was an extraordinary man, but this book failed to capture his essence in an interesting way.
The second book concentrated on Custer, mostly as a compendium of facts.
