About the Author
The best-known of the French Romantic writers, Victor Hugo was a poet, novelist, dramatist, and political critic. Hugo was an avid supporter of French republicanism and advocate for social and political equality, themes that reflect most strongly in his works Les Mis?rables, Notre-Dame de Paris (The Hunchback of Notre-Dame), and Le Dernier jour d'un condamn? (The Last Day of a Condemned Man). Hugo's literary works were successful from the outset, earning him a pension from Louis XVIII and membership in the prestigious Acad?mie fran?aise, and influencing the work of literary figures such as Albert Camus, Charles Dickens, and Fyodor Dostoevsky. Elevated to the peerage by King Louis-Philippe, Hugo played an active role in French politics through the 1848 Revolution and into the Second and Third Republics. Hugo died in 1885, revered not only for his influence on French literature, but also for his role in shaping French democracy. He is buried in the Panth?on alongside Alexandre Dumas and ?mile Zola.

Les Misérables - Volumes I, II, III - French Edition

When I decided to read Les Misérables I was pursuing two objectives: to read a classic novel and to practice and improve my knowledge of the French language. Knowing how long the novel was, both goals seemed difficult to attain. I am happy to say that I was able to accomplish both.
Les Misérables is a fascinating novel in which the author denounces the French society of the 19th century. It tells the story of Jean Valjean, who after 19 years in prison is released only to realize that there is no place in society for a man like him. Reading the story, your learn about the marginal life ex prisoners have to live in a society that forces them to carry a document (a yellow passport) that they have to show all the time in order to function in society; the horrible situation unmarried women are placed in when society punishes them for having children out of wedlock; the situation of the the elderly; and also of abandoned children ...
Hugo also intercalates the main story with long passages of reflections about different subjects such as the history of the "argot", Waterloo, a description of the underground sewer system in Paris, that although they can be challenging for the reader because of their length, they enrich and complete the story.
Les Misérables is not an easy book to read. In order to fully comprehend this story, it is necessary to have some knowledge of the historic events that took place during those years.
The third volume of the Pocket Classiques edition has a listing, in the back of the book, under Les Clés De L'Oeuvre, of the historic events that happened in France since 1723 until 1852, that are paralleled to the events of the story. This feature and a Larousse Encyclopedic Dictionary were very useful to me to identify the events as well as the historic characters that are named in the book.
Even though the vocabulary is not easy, with the aid of a dictionary, I was able to comprehend and enjoy the totality of the text. Due to Hugo's style, long paragraphs in which sentences are connected to each other to no end, to reflect the flow of the writer's thoughts, and the difficulty of the vocabulary, I would not recommend this reading to a French beginner or even an intermediate level.
I laughed, I cried , I worried about the characters ... I spent hours reading the story without being able to put the book down. After finishing, Jean Valjean, Cossette, Fantine, Marius, Gavroche, Javert were in my mind and in my heart for a long time. I feel that Les Misérable enriched my life.

Criticize Hugo, are you kidding?

Excellent book. I wish the rest of the volumes from the same publisher were available. But if you want all of Les Miserables in French from Amazon you have to mix and match the publishers. I also wish Amazon would sell a complete Les Miserables in hardcover, leather bound.

Only volume II-don't be blindsided!

I bought this book for my husband, thinking that it was the entire book. However, when it arrived, I learned that this product is only the second volume of the book. There are actually 5 volumes that make up the entire work of "Les Miserables"!!!! Do not be blindsided before you purchase this book!

The story of Les Miserables is wonderful, of course, but unless you plan on buying the other 4 volumes to the story, getting just this one book is misleading.

Our Common Humanity

This is just basic ideas that are the foundation of our civilization. Aristotle makes observations about our lives and government that should be noted in any political discussion. Logic and having common ground in the use of words makes for a sane and important exchange of ideas. He takes an overview of how we live together and writes about the basic building blocks of society and government. He writes about households and how all is connected in a way that no one is isolated and not important. There is a wholeness that is refreshing. He uses a language common to us all. It is about how we are connected to one another. He has no political axe to grind in our modern day political debates and offers suggestions to lead us to higher ground.

An Important Book but not for Beginners

I gave this book a 5 star rating not because I loved the book but because it is a historically important work. I do not recommend this book as a primer for either special or general relativity, though it is important for anyone interested in the history of science. A nontechnical background on the theories would make reading this less of a slog though I suspect the section on coordinates would be a slog for anyone who is not proficient in math.
Lorentz was a world class physicist and Nobel laureate whose equations gave Einstein the framework to write special relativity. What we know as Special Relativity was once called The Lorentz-Einstein theory, a factoid that would be a good Jeopardy question.
As we get further away from events there is a tendency to gloss over the problems great theories had when they were first proposed. It is similar to mythologizing history. This book does a very good job of explaining why relativity was accepted and the problems that had to be overcome in accepting it.

Easy to understand.

Although it was not as technical as I might have expected it to be, I thought the book did a good job explaining Einstein's theories in layman's terms. Read this book if you have slight interest in the theory of relativity but do not wish to get into the advanced formulas or are not into physics.

Not for Dummies

Actually, altho I have a background in Science, I was hoping this might be dumbed-down a little. I first part was pretty easy to follow and was quite interesting. After that the author got into Mathematics and I got a tad lost.

He, himself states near the end of the book: "...the basic ideas of the theory are really clear and simple; it is only to be regretted that it is impossible to avoid clothing in pretty involved terms..."

Lorentz wrote this when Einstein was only 45 years old. It is an interesting look at how relativity was viewed so long ago.

I recommend it for that reason.

An important book of very wise sayings

This book, Sayings of the Jewish Fathers, was translated with just a few lines as an introduction and only a couple of notes by Dr. Joseph I. Gorfinkle, the author of "The Eight Chapters of Maimonides on Ethics." It is part of Amazon's Library of Jewish Classics, and kindle owners can acquire it for free. It contains the full text of what others translate as "Ethics of the Fathers." Actually, neither translation is precise since the Hebrew "Pirke" means "Chapters." Since the goal of the work is to pass on wise sayings or life goals of ancient sages from about 150 BCE to about 250 CE and since ethics per se was not their goal, a better translation might be Sayings of the Sages.

The original Pirke only had five chapters. The custom arose to add a sixth chapter with interesting information, an introductory paragraph that assures life after death, and a concluding paragraph that emphasizes the importance of Torah study, and to read a chapter each week between Passover and Shavuot (Pentecost) during the Saturday evening service before the end of the Shabbat. The addition of the sixth chapter made it possible to read each chapter during these six weeks. Scholars do not know why the book of reasonable sayings was included in the Mishnah, the basic part of the Talmud, which generally deals with laws. Be this as it may, the book contains many wise ideas that people should know and the custom requiring that it be read is beneficial. This translation is very readable and it contains the extra paragraphs and sixth chapter.

A must read for everyone who is into Jewish wisdom.
The Sayings of the Fathers offers concise points of wisdom that illuminate Torah and fill the soul with insight and inspiration. If you are just learning Judaism this is one of the best places to begin. If you have practicing our religion for years nothing need be added. This is a good translation.

it is okay, interesting historical facts, does reference various other religions other than judaism for the sources. has footnotes for the actual mishnah. old english writing style. it is okay.
