Fascinating reading. It's his journal in raw form. A little tedious to wade through the weather and navigation info, but once that is skimmed the unfiltered impressions of native peoples is informative. I found it interesting that our de-Christianized culture now closely resembles Tahiti's in sexual mores or lack thereof.

Excellent - wish there were more

Will Barnes impresses me as really knowing what he writes about. The authentic details are woven naturally into the stories as an integral part without condescension. The reader will know more about cowboying after reading this than after reading a shelf full of lesser fare. His characters are manly but yet lovable and mix humor, bravery and tragedy in their lives as routine.

Good academic information from a poor storyteller

After reading through half this book, I had to look the author up. Sure enough, the guy was a Victorian-era Classics professor. And it shows in this tome; it's full of wonky information all technically accurate as possible. Yet the story and characters are so meh and, well, Victorian, as to make the book feel not that it takes place in Hellenestic Antiquity but the London of Arthur Conan Doyle with Corinthian columns and togas swapped in.

The main character is a generic cookie-cutter hero named Cleander, a Greek who through improbable circumstances finds himself fighting the hated Romans on behalf of the doomed Carthaginians - who for some reason have no redeeming qualities - yet also kicking back good times and wine with the likes of...Scipio?

Reason for this is the author's reliance and admiration of Polybius on display throughout this book; in both the parroting of facts and opinions expressed in Polybius's Histories: The Carthaginians are hapless and doomed. The Greeks are masters of the world who threw it all away. The Romans are a vicious brand of Greek imitators, but with old Greek virtues intact. And, of course, Scipio is the coolest most awesome guy of anyone everywhere.

The tropes and brittle age of the prose make the events covered in the story seem somehow a few thousand more years out-of-date then they actually are. If you're hard-up for historical fiction from this period - and it is scant - I'd say give at least the sample a try.

The subject matter can be written more interestingly. It is not able to bind the reader to the book. The historical scenes are interwoven so carelessly that the reader looses interest in the book. . However the auther tried his best to put his efforts in his best way. It is a good effort to describe how the carthegians trid their best to protect thier kingdom from the Romans.

False Advertising

After gleaning through the sample copy, I decided to give this a go. However, after purchasing the "1001 African Books," I came to discover that there are about 35 actual books - most of which seem pretty useless - along with a handful of "profiles" on African authors and figures. Honestly, this is a huge waste of money and really is false advertising. The "Conclusion" declares that "This is not the END," which tries to act as some declaration that this is indeed not a fraud of a book. Then it states that there is a 2nd edition forthcoming. But what will they even put in there! Maybe five more books, then we'll reach to a nice round 40. If you want to find a book that deals with cover letters, then this book has it for you. It's really quite horrible, and I wish I never found it.

If you want an excellent compilation of African authors and texts, I suggest checking out Simon Gikandi's "Encyclopedia of African Literature." It's full of useful information on a multitude of African writers and figures, along with common themes and philosophical concepts.

Trust me, if you're interesting in African writers and literatures, then you should completely avoid this book. It's a fraud.

I do not know how to describe this 'thing'. It is not a book, not a collection of essay. It is a collection of words put together by people who may be African. Religious feel-good sentences, Self-help instructions, 'wise' words, short stories, weird super basic management speak. all mixed together. Africa really has interesting stories to tell. This one does not even attempt to provide a narrative, an idea or a story. For people who think Africa has nothing coherent to offer, this will be a confirming skip-through (I did not say 'read'). For those of us who know Africa, this 'thing; is almost insulting to Africa's cultural heritage, development and potential. It is the 21st century. Africa has arrived. This 'thing' does not show it.

Trip down memory lane

This ebook is a reprint of a 1910 book about a couple who take a houseboat trip up Virginia's James River. Along the way they visit the Jamestown site, as well as several of the famous James River plantations. What is charming about their account is that the places they visit have not yet become tourists meccas. They wander around at will without having to cope with obnoxious tourists, tacky gift shops, or even admission prices. Jamestown was almost a forgotten ruin. The plantations were just private homes. However, Shirley plantation was already telling guests a ghost story. My favorite part was the three chapters on Westover.

I realise that there may be people who will read this book with misgivings, or doubt, and may even regard it as purely a flight of the imagination. My purpose is not to convince any one person of my spiritual journeys. What must be revealed, the Spirit of the Lord will reveal, and also to those who are ready to understand it. (Jeremiah 33:3). In 1 Corinthians 2:9 Father God confirms: “No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love Him” (NIV). I want to agree with 1 Corinthians 2:13 – 15: “This is what we speak, not in words, taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, expressing spiritual truths in spiritual words. The man without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned. The spiritual man makes judgment about all things, but he himself is not subject to any man’s judgment”.
The Father God has no favourites. He is no discerner of persons. He longs to have an intimate relationship with every one of his children. Because God is a supernatural Being, it is understandable that He will communicate with us through his Spirit, as John 4:24 explains: “God is spirit, and his worshippers must worship in spirit and in truth.”
“Satan is a person. He is a reality,” I clearly heard God say during one of my journeys. “Do not for one moment underestimate his craftiness and lies.” Satan will try in any which way to deter the children of the living God from walking the road of salvation. But his time is running out. He will try with even greater cunning to drag the children of the Light over the abyss and into the depths of his eternal darkness. It is only by the blood of the Lamb of God, Jesus Christ, Yeshua Ha Maschiach, and through the working of the Holy Spirit, that we will be covered and remain strong enough to resist the relentless attacks of the enemy.

Therefore we must be willing and receptive to be guided by the Holy Spirit in all truth, so that we can experience eternal glory and joy with our heavenly Father in the next life.

In John 16:13-15 Jesus explains: “But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. He will bring glory to me by taking from what is mine and make it known to you. All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said that the Spirit will take from what is mine and make it known to you” .
Father God longs for an intimate relationship with each one of us; He wants us to listen to, and hear his voice. In Numbers 12: 5-8, God says the following about his servant Moses: “Then the Lord came down in a pillar of cloud; he stood at the entrance to the Tent and summoned Aaron and Miriam. When both of them stepped forward, he said, “Listen to my words: “When a prophet of the LORD is among you, I reveal myself to him in visions, I speak to him in dreams.

Helpful Despite Old Style Writing

The first part of the book seems to be notes on sermons or writings on a variety of topics. The last part deals with Elijah and his ministry as a prophet.

The book was first published in 1898, so it is sometimes wordy, and some of Mackintosh's points are muddled and unclear. However, for the most part, the book is not that hard to follow. Some of his comments are rather deep and need some thought, but I like that. I did not always agree with him on things, like judging those within the "assembly" and getting them out if they don't repent. However, there were only a couple of these controversial points. For the most part, his theology seems to be sound.

The punctuation was a bit different than I'm used to, but I chalked that up to being written in the 19th century. He uses quotations, especially from the Bible, with no reference as to where they were taken from, which was somewhat bothersome. Sometimes Mackintosh discusses events and topics out of the order in which they happened. He also often goes off on tangents, where he's discussing one thing, but gets sidetracked and far away from his original topic. Still, I was glad I read the book, because it has some real meat to it. In addition, I am preparing a Bible study on Elijah, and I found that section very helpful.
