About the Author
Marion Harvey was the author of several mystery novels and plays between 1922 and 1935. The first of these was The Mystery of the Hidden Room. Others include The Vengeance of the Ivory Skull, The Clue of the Clock, The House of Seclusion, and The Arden Mystery. Harvey’s plays have been performed in New York, Alabama and Pennsylvania.

Older mystery

This one I have really enjoyed. It is an older story, written in the 1920's, so there are some archaic ideas on behavior. The morals are a bit out dated, not that we couldn't benefit from renewing a few of them. It fits along the lines of a Sherlock Holmes type of mystery and allows the reader to try figuring it out for themselves.

My type of story

I tend to really like stories where they have old houses and find secret rooms and passageways! This is just that sort of story as you can tell by the title. Don't want to tell any more about as probably all the others have, but loved it!

It was all very gruesome

"It was very dark, a dull, cloudy night, and all I beheld was a great black bulk looming before me like some Plutonian monster, harbinger of evil .... I raced up the steps and rang the bell as though in fear of my life." Carleton is summoned by Ruth, wife of the unlikable Philip Darwin because she has been foolish enough to write a note confessing her continued love for Carleton and her horrible marriage. Philip is shot in short order and Ruth is found standing over the body with the murder weapon in her hand. She professes her innocence, Carleton believes her and resolves to find the real killer. Meanwhile, we meet Orton, the Uriah Heep-like secretary, the young doctor, a conscientious coroner, and the police inspector. Suddenly, Mr. Cunningham appears - "..he was about Philip Darwin's height and build, but his face was fleshier," reddish hair and beard, and a fastidious dresser. Is this stranger Philips Darwin's lawyer? Things do not look good for Ruth and she is transferred to jail to await her trial. "Ruth and the horrible creatures who infested the jail! The thought goaded me to desperation." Carleton is determined to get the love of his life out of this mess, to find the real killer, to expose whatever dark secrets the dead husband might have had. To help in this endeavor, Carleton hires Graydon McKelvie, a private investigator with a thing for Sherlock Holmes. And it gets involved real fast! But the book is a pleasure to read. Modern readers should overlook several stereotypes.
